Review of Youth Workshop at Guadalupe, August 23 and August 30, 2008

The participants convened at City Hall.

Dear Collaborators, Supporters and Facilitators,

Convening community with a focus on empowering our youth to lead is not a new concept - the groundwork - the work behind the scenes, is what provides for the amazing and relevant workshop - Convening is a process!

The conversations, the planning, the asking of questions, the discovery, the identification of materials, the research, the gathering of beads, the collecting and cutting of intention sticks, the holistic preparation - is time consuming, tedious and requires perseverance -

To all of you that made the time and will continue - we humbly say thank you with deep gratitude and appreciation. Thank you for an extraordinary workshop!

Funding for these three Saturdays of day long workshops was provided through a collaboration of the Fusion Foundation and For The Children Foundation. http://www.forthechildrenfoundation.org

Community Organizing  E-mail

Community Organizer training and facilitation is based in part on four basic steps of any nonviolent campaign as identified more than 40 years ago by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: (1) collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive, (2) negotiation, (3) self-purification, and (4) direct action.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. (1929-1968), Letter from Birmingham City Jail," 16 April 1963

We have participated and been witness to countless movements, community actions, non-profit start ups and "great ideas."  What we have frequently witnessed is:Annie Speaking

1) the facts of injustices/concerns are collected, identifed and determined to be alive

2) the individual, group, community or organization moves into direct action

We enjoy being able to provide train and facilitate experiential learning of the art of negotiation. Learning the power of negotiation and experiencing the leverage opportunities available through the art of negotiation is an incredible gift to any individual, group, community or organization.

At the heart of any sustainable community organizing, growth of great ideas, pursuit of individual dreams though is what King called "self-purification." Many different terms have been used to describe this process some call it depth work, vision quests, self-actualization, or an awakening process. Regardless of term or phrase we use to reference this process it is best described by saying - "peace begins within." What we have learned is this is not a one time event, this is an ongoing lifetime process - Annie likes to refer to it as a dance or learning to surf the waves, she says "it is to find the rythym of our souls the beat of our drum and learnhow to integrate it within our "family," community, workand our daily practices.

At the root of community organizing is learning the communication of needs and how best to begin that journey then to learn how we currently communicate our personal needs in relationship to how others communicate their needs. It is one of the great journeys of a lifetime!
